When it comes to whisk(e)y, I’m pretty democratic in my tastes. Despite that, there’ve always been a few that just haven’t done it for me, and one of those was Canadian Club. Memories of relatives mixing it with various sodas and high school kids stealing it from their parents’ cabinets.
So you can believe me when I tell you that the Canadian Club 100% Rye is the real deal. As in really, really good.
The juice is from Alberta Distillers, makers of Whistlepig Whiskey, Masterson’s Rye, Alberta Dark Batch Rye, and many other fine things. Though the marketing around the CC 100% Rye suggests it’s the launch of a new product, Canadian Club clarified that it’s actually a repackaging of an existing product for new markets, including the U.S.
The nose has hints of fruit, oak, vanilla, and buttered toast. The palate is full: cinnamon, malt, more vanilla, and a slight bit of citrus. The finish brings the citrus and vanilla together in a very fun way.
I’ve had it in a Manhattan and neat and it’s terrific either way. At a mere $25, this is a high quality everyday sipper/mixer that should be on everybody’s shelf.
Cheers, friends! – TM
